Shawn is being gracious consideorng the exhaust note of the factory 1.9l. I was about 2 miles from the dealer on a test drive, turned to the saleperson and pronounced the exhaust note to be "a fart through a tin funnel". I still believe this decription captures the essence of the factory system better than any other description I have heard.

Add a Remus, cone filter (sorry Shawn) and a supercharger and the note, with superchager moan is so good it probably wouldn't be allowed on network TV (R-rated at least).

I have driven the 2.8 in a 528i and a Z3. In the 528 I was truly impressed. In the big sedan, it was a smooth and sophisticated powerplant. In the Z3 2.8 it was a smooth and sophisticated powerplant -- trouble is, the Z3 is a sportscar. I still prefer the 1.9l Z3 as I have equipped it.

And by the way, there is one thing that my Z3 1.9 gave me that no 2.8l owner will ever be able to savor -- the wonderful Autumn of 1996.
