I got $27,000 from the dealer for my 1.9 with 18,000 miles on it, 1998. Got the 6 CYLINDER and LOVE IT! The 4 was just too underpowered, as much as i wanted to love the car i hated that feeling of knowing that most cars on the were faster even though i "looked" fastser. I dont want the stupid comebacks a 1.9 can hold its speed in a turn because it is leighter. I have owned both, I have driven both to the limits, One day when i was chasing my brother in his s2000 i gave it way to much throttle comming up a hill, spun the back end around, flew onto the grass by a chapel and slid like 20 feet. Its that type of juvenile fun i love in the 6 cylinder. Seriously though the problem with the 4 was that i wanted it to do so much more than it was capable of. I love the 6. I love the feeling of shifting hard into 2nd and getting the back end to break out, and then into 3rd and getting more wheels spin, not chirps, wheels spin, all you M roadster drivers know what i am talking about, that is sweet M is sweet, I would be dead or in Jail with an M, that is why it wasnt an option when i looked at cars. My father doesnt want to kill me. I loved my 4 cylinder when it was all I had, and anyone who has driven both can relate, and i mean really driven both. I had both for about a Year now and I am glad to say i have never looked back. I see 1.9's on the road and i feel bad for them. Because that car isnt that fun at all. You talk about handling, i dont know if any of you have ever been in the s2000 but that thing is rock solid. I too hate the light feeling all Z3's have in their steering, I too have fat tires all around 225/255. The s2000 devours the road at speeds i would never attempt, steering is heavy and direct they way it should be, car doesnt toss you around like my z3 does. Its not a swaybar issue, its a chassis issue. BMW will fix it on the next go around. I just dont understand why people on here argue that there is anything better about the 1.9 than the 6 cylinders. I for one KNOW my 6 cylinder with the wider track handles much better, the back end in the 4 had a mind of its own, not power slides, just simply loosing downforce. I know why you are defensive 4 cylinder guys, when i found out my brother was getting an s2000 I had a million excuses why my car was better. It was tearing me up inside, i was really full of shi#. So got a good trade in and made the switch. Have LOVED my car every since. You cant LOVE cars and LOVE a 1.9, the engine simply sucks. I know you all think you are going fast becuase the engine works hard. Take both cars on the highway, cruise at 40mph in 3rd and punch it, you will see what displacement does to a car, you wont see for long becuase the 6 cylinder will loose you. And that feeling sucked to me. I hated the feeling of when the highway hit an incline the car would cease to accelerate over 70MPH, sure i could keep it planted and get it up to like 115 but it feels so powerless.
I know this room is ego overdosed whith people who will spell check my posts to discredit the fact that the 1.9 really is a snail, dress it up with all the MG Racing accessories you want, it still sucks. I know I owned one, i thought like you did, i dumped 2 grand into a stereo and 3 more into wheels, pretending i could make my car feel better to drive when all along the heart of any car is its engine, isnt that right? wont you all agree the heart of a car is its engine, without that all else is meaningless. Sure the 1.9 handles well, so do all z3, it doesnt handles BETTER than other Z3's so drop that case, it handles well as do all BMW'S, the engine is just like the black plague on the performance terrain of BMW, thank god they killed it before it damaged the reputation of BMW drivers around the globe. "HIP HIP HORRAY..HIP HIP HORRAY..HIP HIP..OHH WHELL YOU GET THE MESSAGE...peace out snails
