A harness will keep you in better control of your car. You get better information from your seat and you stay put when hard cornering and most importantly in a wreck.
Maintaining control of the car for a longer period will hopefully help keep you from getting in trouble in the first place.
Besides that if you were going into a roll over type accident how are you going to pull yourself under the dash to protect yourself? Personally I will be fighting the car to the last second trying to get it back under control.
Given the choice of a possible head injury or being crushed by my car when I got thrown out I'll take the head injury (that's why I bought an expensive helmet).
