The rubber bumpers inside the hood which press up against the body of the car. They're in the corners of the hood behind the gills.
The source of the noise was found by the dealer, who adjusted the bumpers to hold against the car body more tightly. They also coated the bumpers with a bit of transparent grease.
The problem has not returned.

: I have just been out in my brand new M roadster (RHD) and there is a very loud rattle in front of the passanger..
: It sounds metalic (although hard to tell from the drivers side) or could be heavy plastic.
: What on earth could it be? It is over uneaven roads.. Mary could not tell for sure if it was front or back but pretty sure it was way up in front.
: Please help me! Also fairly sure it is not the glove box...
: Any suggestions at all would be great.
