I was in the market for a Lotus S4 or S4S for quite a while....I had an RX7 twin turbo, Supra twin turbo, and now just purchased a 2000 MZ3. I did a lot of research on the Lotus and almost purchased one, but got talked out of it. Pre 94 models were notorious for overheating and didn't even have power steering or ABS brakes. With 264hp and 261 lbs/ft of torque, the 94' S4 is quick, but does not feel powerful due to the smallish 2.2 liter four cylinder. When the S4S increased hp to 300 and torque to 290, the car was a little more powerful, but still had "turbo lag and is very quirky. At least my supra was a 3 liter 6 cylinder and had some low end power. The car looks incredible on the outside, and that was what attracted me to it, but is very "cheap" on the inside with few amenities. It has to be driven hard to feel fast, has terrible blind spots, and the pedals are WAY to close together. You must wear sneakers to drive. If you are over 6' tall, forget it. Check insurance rates!!! Very high. I looked at a 95 S4S with only 9k miles that was already having its' throw out bearing replaced. Be prepared to spend $$$ on mechanical repairs when necessary, and good luck finding an educated mechanic to work on it. Most of them are not driven regularly and are not properly maintained...only 300 1994 models were even made! They are a tempting purchase with a sticker of well over 70k and an asking price of around 38k-44k, but once you buy it, you too will be stuck with it for a while (limited market) and if you put miles on it as a daily driver,it will be worth squat when you try to sell......Save your money and get a 1996+ 3.5 liter twin turbo lotus, or trade the 1.9 Z3 for the new more powerful MZ3. Just my opinion, but I was a serious shopper for several years, and did my homework.
Good luck
