This is nothing new and has been used for years. I had a 1970 Datsun Roadster that dropped the alternator out of the electrical circuit at around 5000 rpm. Only impact was a notable dimming of the headlamps if driving at night. This was a stock feature on the 1600cc engine. The only problem I would anticipate would be covering all the bases as far as satisfying the newer over-engineered electronic/computer sensors and such on the Z3.

Terry :-)
