1981 300D as a everyday car - air conditioner refi (archive)

2 questions on airconditioners in a daily driver I will get:

I am going to buy a 1981 300D from a mechanic that my mom has used for 10 years (I know he is very trustworthy.)

These cars are bulletproof (probably most dependable car ever made) but I am concerend about the airconditioner.

Sine it is a freon system, if it goes out, how much would I have to spend to refit a new system. It uses general motors systesm in it. A friend that sells used cars (is manager of a dealership) says $700 maximum to refit the system to a non-cfc one.

1) Anyone agree/disagree with that estimate?

Also, I have read that old system refit are only about 70% effective as the old freon one? The 300D has a very strong air conditioner so I doubt 70% would be that bad. But I live in Houston and it will be sitting outside during the day so it could be a big difference.

2) Any experiences with refit systems and how effective they cool?

Thanks for any help/opinions.
