: I also have a 2K MZ3 with about 2,500 miles on it. So far I have used about 1qt. per 1,000 miles. My dealer suggested to wait until the oil consumtion stops before switching to synthetic, which should be by 5K. My current plan is to change my oil now with standard oil and hopefully switch to synthetic at 5K. My understanding is that BMW has a deal with Casteroil, so all new cars and BMW brand oil should be based on that brand. I think up until that change BMW was using Valvoline oils (at least for thier synthetic). If anyone out there knows the facts on this, please update.

: Any comments from other MZ3 owners on oil consumption rates?

At 2,000 mi. I have yet to add any oil. It's only used slightly less than 1/2 qt. I remember reading on the BMWUSA site around Oct./Nov. 99 that they had just changed their supplier from Valvoline to Castrol. As the M engines are shipped from the Fatherland, it would be any bodies guess as to when they were made hence which brand BMW was using at the time.

I take it your dealer is telling you it has natural oil in it initially. My dealer is telling me it has synthetic. That's what I mean. Nobody seems to agree, so how do one know what to add?
