I have searched the archives to answer a few questions re: my first oil chng on my 00'M and seem to have developed more questions than I had when I started. I am at 2,000 mi. and feel I need to change it soon to remove breakin shavings. Any clarification would be appreciated. 1. What's with using natural oil for breakin before changing to synthetic? I'm not familiar with the need for a different breakin oil.

When BMW switched to synthetic motor oil in the 2.8 they applied a sticker so thet there would not be any confusion as to what oil should be used to top off and use for oil service. Would it not be reasonable to ass/u/me that if your engine was delivered with synthetic oil there would a sticker indicating it? I am also amazed at the misinformation to a such a simple question. YMMV.
3.I read several mentions of using a 36mm socket to remove the top of the filter housing on 2.8's. My filter housing has a 13mm bolt that appears to hold the top plate on. Is this different in M's or in later models?
Yes the 2.8 and 3.2 filter housings are different.
4. does the filter housing top plate simply come off after removing this bolt or does it screw off also somehow? Do you need to tap it off from underneath.
It will just lift off after removing the center bolt.
