Extended Mechanical Warranty Question (archive)

I recently became the proud owner of a 2000 Z3 2.3 (w/ 5sd). Since this is my first BMW, I have had no experience with BMW reliability, esp. with Z3's. The dealer is offering a BMW mechanical warranty for approximately $1,700 for 7 years/75k miles (a 3-year extension to the factory warranty). I realize that there are other 3rd party policies that are cheaper.

How necessary is an extended warrany? Am I likely to have major problems between years 4 through 7? So far, the car is absolutely perfect. No problems. What are people experiencing with 99's and 98's?

Where is the engine and trans assembled. In S.C. or in Germany?
