FWIW, you are not alone. I also have a '96, but with no alarm. Its electrical system has not been modified in any way, remaining stock BMW. However, on 2 or 3 occasions since the car was new, the dome light and flashers have come on together. Pressing its button on and off would shut the flashers off, but the only way to get the dome light off was to open and close the door. Its switch was inoperable. Of course, since I couldn't reproduce it and the story seemed so odd, the dealer seemed skeptical and was unable to find anything. Since it happens so infrequently, I chose not to push it further. At least for now.
