: I recently became the proud owner of a 2000 Z3 2.3 (w/ 5sd). Since this is my first BMW, I have had no experience with BMW reliability, esp. with Z3's. The dealer is offering a BMW mechanical warranty for approximately $1,700 for 7 years/75k miles (a 3-year extension to the factory warranty). I realize that there are other 3rd party policies that are cheaper.
: How necessary is an extended warrany? Am I likely to have major problems between years 4 through 7? So far, the car is absolutely perfect. No problems. What are people experiencing with 99's and 98's?
: Where is the engine and trans assembled. In S.C. or in Germany?
Engine and tranny come from Europe. I think the engine is actually made in Austria and the tranny is from Germany.
Your $1,700 warranty is really for 3 years as the first 4 are already on BMW. Two thoughts, put the $1,700 in a mutual fund and pay for anything you need to have done after 4 years. Second, I suggest that you will probably want a new 2003 model year Z3 as they change the styling that year. Either way giving the $1,700 to someone for an extended warranty would be a mistake. Not a big one but none the less a mistake.
My $0.02. Hope this helps.
