: For the last 3 years, the "Z Register" organization (now known as the Z3 CCA) has, in conjunction with BMW Manufacturing, organized a wonderful event at the factory over Labor Day weekend--the Z3 Homecoming. I believe the last two years it was the largest gathering of BMW owners in the world.

: The BMW CCA is the national car club for BMW owners. The Z Register is the national car club for Z3 owners.

: BMW NA wants to deal only with 1 car club in the U.S. for events--that is the BMW CCA.

: BMW CCA has laid out rules for affiliate clubs. Some of these rules are very restrictive, depending on your point of view. Unless the Z Register complies with these rules, they will not be recognized as a chartered club under the BMW CCA.

: If they are not a chartered club under the BMW CCA, the BMW CCA will not let them help with Homecoming.

: The BMW CCA has never done anything to help with Homecoming in the past. They have not sent representatives to the Homecoming as far as I know--instead they rely on Z Register members who are also BMW CCA members to write articles about the Homecoming for the Roundel (magazine of the BMW CCA).

: My personal opinion is that the BMW CCA should leave well enough alone--they should take the position that they do not care what the affiliation of the Z Register is with the BMW CCA--even if there is no affiliation--and say that since the Homecoming has been wonderful the last three years, those that imagined it, coordinated it, organized it, etc. should be the same ones to do it for 2000--i.e. Wayne and Amy Lester of the Z Register.

: The BMW CCA is far from Z3-friendly. Most BMW CCA chapters will not allow Z3s in driving schools because they say convertibles without a full roll-cage are unsafe. (Anyone else spot the tiny picture in the latest Roundel of a stock M roadster with stock roll hoops on the Nurburgring? Gosh, how unsafe--can't believe the BMW CCA would promote such an unsafe thing with a picture in the Roundel...).

: Octoberfest gets page after page of coverage in the Roundel, while the Z3 Homecoming gets, if I recall correctly, a small two-page article. The Z3 Homecoming is a bigger BMW event than Octoberfest.

: My personal opinion is that all of us that are BMW CCA members should write the national board of the BMW CCA and tell them to leave well enough alone--tell them we want the Z Register organizing Homecoming as they always have in the past without interference from the BMW CCA. Tell them if they want to help the Z Register, that is wonderful, but that this is not a BMW CCA event--the BMW CCA did not create it, promote it (other than the small free event listing in the back of the Roundel), or ever help with it in the past.

Alan, that is a wonderful wrapup of what has been discussed here over the past 24 hours. May we copy some of your text and send to BMWspaceCCA in our correspondance with them?
Hope to see you at Homecoming 2000
Joan
