I ran some numbers through the calculator a while back before the turbo. And after multiplying the torque at each rpm (off a dyno graph) along with the torque multiplication with each gear, I found that the torque to the ground was always higher in the lower gear upto redline. I think the shift points were were 6800, 6800 and 6500 rpms.(2nd, 3rd and 4th gear changes)
