Al, the only events I am aware of that BMWCCA does not allow open top cars without roll cages are Driver's Schools. Autocrosses are no problem, unless there are specific chapters that prohibit it. Here in Chicago all convertibles can participate in safety schools, autocross schools and autocrosses. Yet, very few Z3's ever show up. I don't know if Windy City has ever had an autocross with more Z3's than 5 series. There are several 5 series owners who are regular participants, but my M Coupe and the class champion's M Roadster are the only Z3 based regular participants.
