License plate form-fact - Euro vs US (archive)

An idea recently came to as I was washing my new Z... I noticed that the license-plate area on the rear of the car could hold either the US-style or Euro-Style tags. This appears to be the case on my 525iT as well.

So, I start thinking, "What if US states offered both styles? " The color patterns would match, and perhaps they could prefix the tag number with the state ID ... "CA 3ABC123" The Euro-style plates definently look better on front bumpers (no plates look better, but they're required in some areas).

People already pay extra for vanity, or environmental plates... how much more would people pay for the Euro-style.

Any thoughts? Anyone know who to talk to about this?

Dave
