: When we took delivery of our '98 528i, the content documents said it was assembled in Dingolfing, Germany. But the auto tranny was a GM unit built in France. I had to think hard about that one before I got over it. Actually, it's worked out fine. I imagine BMW keeps pretty close control of such things.
They do, and there are many of us that think that the Spartanburg factory builds just as high quality cars as any other BMW plant. There are some however who sneer at the American worker (for wnatever reason) and demean the Z3's quality (I'll be the first to admit that the early cars had some problems, but no more than any other complety new car model). These will be the same people who will extol the quality of their "German-built" 3 series (until it is pointed out that they were built in "The Land of the Lada").
