Chris,

I guess we need to know which windscreen, *Mesh* or *Clear*? I have the Mesh version…Basically, the effect, if any, is difficult to quantify. Now, the Clear version may be a different story.

I have an '98 1.9; and, have kept accurate records/spreadsheets. IMO, the major factors are: A) Whether Top's UP or DOWN; and, B) Below or above 80MPH.

When mine was in OEM guise, here were my observations, roughly speaking:

  • 36mpg - Best case, under ideal but still *normal* conditions. Top & Windows UP, 75mph, ~6,000ft. elev., 90-95 deg. F, no stops. Range = 421mi.
  • 30-33mpg - Usual Top UP highway results. Say, 65-70mph.
  • 29 -31mpg - Usual Top DOWN results. Again, 65-70mph.
  • 26-28mpg - 80mph. Top DOWN will result in lower figure, naturally.

The M44 seems to have a sweet spot at 3,500rpm, which translates to 75mph in 5th. Hence, that's where you'll get the best mileage. The turbulence starts to be severe at 80mph, IMO.
