I had a similar problem with my '97 2.8 last summer. I took it to the dealer where they determined that it was a problem with the sending unit which is in the tank. After replacing it, I haven't had any problems.

: Had just filled the gas tank on my M Roadster during a roadtrip, when suddenly the fuel gauge needle suddenly went to empty and the red light turned on. It stayed like this for about 10 seconds before the needle went back up to full. The engine was not affected by this at all and I didn't notice anything else bizarre. But it kept happening every two minutes or so. Any ideas? Has this happened to anyone else? I can't imagine it being from bad gasoline. Maybe something wrong with the sensor in the fuel tank?
