I have a '00 M and a similiar thing happen to me last week. I filled up the tank and went home. The next morning when I started the car the gas gauge went up for about 20 seconds and then dropped to empty. I knew that I had a full tank so I pulled out anyway, About 2 minutes later the gauge went back up and I haven't had the problem since.

If there is a fix, please announce it on the MB.
