Actually I've been told this is a very common problem with not only Z3s but all 3 series BMWs.

Some people get it intermittently. In my case I had it fail solidly, it started when I was driving from the 1998 Homecoming up to the Grove Park Inn.

I never re-fuel with the ignition key in the lock since I always lock my gas cap.

The fix was to replace the fuel level sender which is integral with the fuel pump. It hasn't recurred, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it happened when I get in the car to drive home this evening.
