What's the real deal with liters vs power? (archive)

Question for you mechanically inclined people:

What's the deal with the relationship between liters and power? I basically understand that more liters means more power, but here's a "for example" for you.

I've got 2.8L on my Z. A lot of mustangs have the 5.0 . I was checking out a porsche site that said there is a Porsche GTS with 3.8 liters that has a bhp of 750 hp. A lot of 4 cylinder japanese cars claim +200 bhp. I know that this has probably everything to do with engine type, turbo, etc., but can anybody explain this to me in like an "Idiot's Guide" sort of way?

Thanks,
Ryan
