Loud Noise heard when shifting in/out of 1st gear (archive)

This post may seem silly to some people since it demonstrates a complete lack of knowledge in general automotive transmission. Anyways, here it goes...

I have noticed from day one a loud banging noise whenever I shift into and out of the first or the reverse gear. When this happens, it feels like something like a shaft is been shift into / out of place right underneath the driver seat.

Is this a normal behavior and why does it happen? If
not, any hypothesis as to what might have gone wrong ?
