Well, DSC or Dynamic Stability Control, is a total vehicle stabilazation system. It uses the ABS braking system in conjunction with the ASC (which controls throttle operation and transmission electronics) to help keep the vehicle tracking straight and it also prevents the wheels from spinning and thus prevents the driver from partaking in "spirited" driving. Your M does not have DSC, nor do any of the M's (except the M5 I think) so, your ASC basically sees when the rear wheels are about to spin and then reduces engine throttle accordingly to prevent unwanted vehicle stability loss. The ASC, when disabled then does not control said wheel spin, which in turn allows for spirited driving. And what fun it is then!!! DSC actually works on all four wheels, so it can automatically apply braking to any wheel which the DSC Module notices is about to or has begun to spin at a different rate than the others (it uses ABS to get the RPM's). Whereas the ASC only works on rear wheels and does not incorporate braking control on the front wheels, thus the M's are then capable of more smile inducing slides :o) plus, the 3.2 L 6 cylinder S52TU motor helps.
