I don't know how long carnuba has been around (probably much longer)- still, I think these "new" water based paints must have come out later than 78 so the amount of time that both carnuba and polymer type waxes and polishes have been tried on water based paints is probably the same.

Unless you are polishing the trunk or under the hood, surely the clear coat prevents the cleaner/wax/whatever getting anywhere near the water-based paint?
I think a more interesting issue is BMW's move from solvent-based to powder-based clear coat. I think incompatibilities in this process were behind the decision to temporarily halt Atlanta Blue production.
