I purchased my Z3 (a used 1996 1.9 with 15,000 miles and one owner before me) about two months ago and I have been slowly teaching myself how to drive the car since. This weekend was like a final exam to "Z3 driving 101". I'm sure I have a lot left to learn, but I think I have the handling down pretty good.
If any of you in the southeast United States have not been to The Dragon in you Z, you absolutely have to go. You better believe I am going back! I made the run a total of 5 times (a little over 100 miles). I am very sore from the experience...It will take a lot out of you.
I feel I should mention that safety should be a major concern for you when you go. Many people mentioned it to me before I made the trip and I MUST pass it on to anyone considering the trip up there...When I was driving up US28 towards US129 (where the roads began to get real curvy), I drove by a bad accident that must have happened not 5 minutes before I pulled up. A motorcycle crossed the yellow line coming around a corner and went head on into a 4-door car. There were several people helping out and there was a pack of 30 or so motorcycles behind me, so I did not stop...When I drove by, though, they were giving the cyclist CPR (There was a lot of blood and I don't think he made it). I spoke with a few people at an overlook on the far side of The Dragon and heard that a guy died last weekend on a Harley...The biggest advice I can give to anyone is to stay on your side of the yellow line and always watch out for the motorcycles...
If anyone wants to go up there on a weekend in June, e-mail me and we can arrange to meet. There were a lot of Miatas and old MGs up there, but I did not see any Z3s at all. I did see a 2000 328Ci, but it looks like he was just passing through.
