: I'm going to buy a 2.3 on Tuesday. I've never bought a car before in my life (all my previous cars were hand me downs from my parents), and I don't want to over pay.
: The BMW dealer I'm looking at says his price is $1600 over the dealer's invoice. The other dealers in my area won't quote a price over the phone.
: Consumer Reports (and a few other places on the net {carpoint...}) state that you should NEVER pay more then $200 over the dealer's invoice.
Consumer Reports isn't really up to it. You will NEVER find any BMW for sale, new, from a dealer, in the United States, for $200 over invoice. Perhaps if there is a problem with the car or they can't sell it for a year, maybe, but other than that, no way.
: I guess most of the $200 goes straight to the sales person (i.e., their wage for selling the car).
: I've also read on the net that certain car dealers don't haggle (BMW, Mer., Por...).
: In short:
: 1) Is $1600 over dealer's invoice to high?
: 2) Is $200 over dealer's invoice realistic?
: 3) Has anybody used priceline to get their car?
: 4) Do BMW dealers haggle?
: 5) Any advice for a car buying virgin?
$1600 is a pretty good price. Generally, 5% of the purchase price as profit to the dealer is considered a good deal. The dealers *will* haggle, but on a car with this demand, I don't think you'll be able to do much better than what you got. If a couple hundred dollars are worth it (not more than that), you probably could find a better deal but you would have to travel.
Good Luck.
