I installed the Ungo alarm too.. I was able to get the screw caps off with minimal damage by using a flat-head eyeglass screwdriver, and pry the caps off carefully.

I purchased a bunch of extras before I started because I anticipated ruining them, but, did not.

If you are careful, it's pretty easy.
