I've had numerous run-ins over the years with US built E36 318's as loaners when I had an E36 M3 and I've noticed NO difference in build quality... the US one squeaked just the same as my German built one! :D Seriously, after spending time in a multitude of BMW's (E36's, E46's, E39's, E38's), owning three German ones and spending a sum total of three weeks in American ones, I don't see a build quality difference between American and German.

The BMW factory in SC does a GREAT job. A friend has an older 318ti that's still in incredible shape, my new M5 has more squeaks than his car does! (E39's are notorious for a rear seat squeak that's just a pain in the ASS to get rid of).

Hopefully I'll be able to shed more light on this subject soon, 'cause I WANT TO GET A Z!

Jeff
