When I bought my 2000 the salesman threw in a couple of filters and suggested that I might want to change my oil more frequently than the interval shown by the lights. BMW does follow the light interval, which most people expect to be 10K-15K miles. I bought the synthetic and will change at about half of the BMW interval, without resetting the lights.
