WAY OT: Security Advisory. PROTECT yourselves! (archive)

Ok, I know we have a WIDELY varying level of computer expertise on this board. From "Which key is the any key? It says 'Press any key to continue.'" to "Wow, adjusting my MTU really helped my throughput!" to "Well, the stack call at 0xa0 caused an illegal operation..." you get my drift. I consider myself to be fairly computer literate but I got shown that I know DICK about networking security.

Go to HTTP://WWW.GRC.COM and click on Shields Up. What you see may horrify you. I was sharing my hard drive with the world... all my info was out there for ANYONE to look at. Needless to say I got meself over to BlackICE and got a personal firewall posthaste. They recommend ZoneAlarm but I found BlackICE to be easier to use. You can get zonealarm at WWW.ZONEALARM.COM and BlackICE at WWW.NETWORKICE.COM. I was AMAZED! I have a DSL connection so I'm up ALL the time, dialup connections aren't quite as susceptible, but I logged TEN attacks in a day! That's 10 people before that were probably snooping through my PC, looking for credit card info, etc. Go take the ShieldsUP test... I'm interested to see how many of us are sitting out there bare assed naked on the 'net!
