I'm amazed that the press really doesn't point out this downside to the "broadband revolution". But it goes even further: at my brother's employer, one of the owners contacted a big DSL provider (name withheld to protect... ME!).

Since I'm the guy that helps them out with their network issues, they called me to find out where to connect the wire. At which point I had to put the brakes on the entire installation.

Get this: I spoke to the installer and he said "all the security matters are handled at the central office". Right! Like they want the liability when there's a breach.

So I called the central office which, of course, explained that customers are responsible for their own security. End of connection.

This same level of ignorance or cover-up happens every day, when some unsuspecting customer signs up for any broadband service. Most people (as in 99%+) just do not know that >everything< on their computer will be on public display after the tech has performed a default installation.

I find it shocking and a complete disservice to the public that no one provides any media coverage about this. I don't want to sound paranoid, but privacy is rapidly departing in our society. Okay - I'm off my soapbox.

Mike
