I was looking for a way to mount a camera in the car (2.8 roadster) for use during autox and DEs, and came up with the following solution that is especially cheap if you are a photographer and already have a Bogen tripod head. Even otherwise, it's a 50 dollar solution:
It works only if you have the top down and don't use the boot cover. You can then get a Bogen super clamp (any good photo store should have it), and a stud to go with it (total of $25). The clamp can be attached to the middle depression that serves as the handle for pulling the top down and up. I have a couple of Bogen heads; the "3d" 3025 head works well here and probably costs another 20-30 bucks if you need to buy it.
One can also clamp it to the roll bar, and I did this for a highway run, but thought it is less stable for track or autox. There are other types of clamps at a photo store that would work better with the roll bar I think (the kind with two halves for instance); these are also compatible with the Bogen heads since you just need the right stud to with it.
Anyway, the racing sites sell solutions that cost $100 or so; this is a cheaper alternative that seems to work, and does not hurt the car in any way if you use the top handle to clamp (i.e, no depressions or marks).
