I'm sure if you want them to spend an extra hour repairing your car they will gladly accept an hours flat rate from you. I don't see them doing this for free. I also don't think they could remove the sending unit without the carpet completely out of the way. IMO

: The gauge on my 97 2.8 jumps around too. I didn't want to have this caesarian operation performed needlessly on her so I've been waiting for a real fix to become available. Anyway, when installing the oem roll hoops last week I had to pull the carpet back to get to the screws that hold down the storage box. I could clearly see down to the sending unit panel and I'd guess cutting the carpet is not required. It's just that it probably saves them about a hour's labor.

: : unit. In fact the carpet is precut in this location. The only other way to get at the sending unit would require the removal of the gas tank.

: : : I recently had may car in the local BMW shop to fix a gas guage problem (when the gas tank was full, the gas guage would sometimes read "empty"). In order to access the gas tank, the tech. cut a big "C" shape through the carpet & padding behind the passenger seat. Is this the normal way to repair this problem? I can't imagine that this is the BMW recommended way to repair this problem.
