yes, standard block aluminum, M is iron.
i suspect the 3.0 and 2.8 share the same block. as i recall, it is about 50 pounds lighter than the old iron block engine, probably roughly comparable to difference from M engine. M Z3 also weighs more because of bigger brakes, standard power top.
