Shattered Glass (archive)

Yesterday I closed the passenger door on my Z3 as usual after my finacee got out. When the door hit the jam the passenger side glass shattered into a million little pieces. The top was down but it still should not have broken. And it's amazing how much the glass exploded - much of it was powderized and the rest was found in every little place in every part of the interior no matter how remote. After half an hour of picking glass particles out of the seat area so that I could drive I took it down the street to a car wash and vacuumed it out. I'm still finding glass.

Is this a known problem? I bought this 1998 Z3 2.8 one week ago as a Certified Pre-Owned. My first experience with BMW quality. I can only imagine that it's not going to be a covered item (even though the original warranty is still in effect) and that BMW will overcharge for the glass and labor even though it's obviously a defect.
