Regardless of interior materials, the TTs and TT Roadsters are still based upon the same framework as the VW Golf, Cabrio, Beetle & Jetta, all of which are significantly less expensive. We have a VW New Beetle. Although not replete with the artistic interior of the TT, the New Beetle is an inexpensive vehicle that comes with most of the bells and whistles present in our '00 528i. I believe both the Beetle and TT were penned by Freeman Thomas. Nevertheless, the family is undeniable.Regarding the shared platform, all four (2 coupes, 2 convertibles) versions of the TT utilize modified versions of VW's venerable 1.8T to pump out 180 or 225 hp (depending upon your choice of engine).
An option laden Cabrio will still cost roughly half that of the TT convertible with the 225 hp engine. (The cost of quattro on the Audi is only a ~$1500 option.)
The four Ingolstadt rings, however, are a $15,000 option.
Why is it so expensive? Because it CAN be.
