It is a fallacy to create "phantom races" by comparing lap times year to year - especially in an endurance race like Le Mans. Any driver with an ounce of sense will win with the slowest speed possible.

From the 16 cylinder F1 cars of the 750 Kg formula of the thirties to the present day, Audi vehicles have competed successfully in a number of venues -- perhaps even more than BMW. These include Formula one, International rallying, Trans-Am, Pikes Peak Hillclimb, British and German sedan series and now Le Mans.
