: : Brian,
: : Your amp is really nice looking.
: : I also have the 6.5 BAs up front and a sub woofer (Kicker solo baric 8 inch) in the passenger side foot well. I am driving my BAs with an a/d/s amp 120x2W bridged and the sub woofer with 120Wx1 bridged. I am driving the stock 3 inch speakers with 40W each. My total output max 440W but I am sure I never use that much power. I would someday like to eliminate the footwell sub and do what you have done with the factory drop in. I have a few questions. Does the new sub woofer from BMW lend itself for replacement with the JL 6.5 inch? Will the screw holes line up? Will there be enough depth for the new driver? With adequate power does the factory 6.5 sub sound good? What frequencies are you sending to it? My sub gets 100Hz and below. How would the factory driver respond with a band of frequecies...say 45-150 HZ? Just asking.
: : thanks for your insight

: : : I'm in the process of my stereo upgrade (I have a few fixes to go), but thought you all might want to know about the subwoofer:
: : : I bought (from my dealer), and installed the new (single 6.5 driver) sub. It IS a "drop-in" replacement for the old one (I had the snorkel beast). Initially, I tried it without upgrading the amp...just plugged & bolted it in. It didn't rattle...but it didn't make much sound either (I guess that's why the new configuration has a second amp!). My old one was terrible, so I was just happy not to hear the distortion, but no real additional bass was heard.
: : : This was no problem, b/c the next step was to replace the factory sub with a Zapco AG650 AMP (I also did the Boston Pro6.5's, a new Eclipse head unit and 8 disc changer).
: : : The Sub now is VERY nice with some nice power to it. It does distort at moderate levels, however I am quite satisfied. I do plan on further replacing the 6.5 driver in the new factory enclosure as soon as the new JL 6.5 inch sub is released this fall. This JL Sub should be a further improvement able to handle more power.
: : : I plan on writing it all up for MZ3.net soon. I have a load of pictures...here is the amp + changer. BTW, this amp is GREAT! It looks like it is MADE for this car...mounted on the top ceiling of the trunk in the back...it only takes 2 inches away from back 6 inches of the trunk ceiling!! Nothing on the floor. More details soon...
of the new sub in its enclosure?
