SHREDDED a Tire Autocrossing (archive)

Had great fun this weekend, on the infield of Road Atlanta. Did autocrosses both yesterday and today. Fun course - mid speed, but well designed. My front tires were near the end to start (third set this year), and the second to the last run today (of six) the right front tire shredded. Amazing. Over half the circumference, a swath four or five inches wide now sticks out nearly two inches, with remnants of the belts all around. Luckily the tire didn't lose pressure and ruin the rim!

Hoosiers, of course!

It looks like damage from overpressurizing the tires. Which I do, of course. . . I run 59 psi in the front, and 53 in the rear. I almost have to, to get good handling. Any less, in fact, and they roll over and scrub the sidewall. Also, Mark Sipe recommends 57-60 in front. All of the wear on the previous two sets was on the outer rim, but on these tires it was in the middle.

I suspect that I could get a bit more wear at lower pressures, but am unwilling to give up my now excellent handling.
