I can understand how importing a 2000 M Roadster (or any previous year) could pose a problem, given the differences in engine specs. However, given the fact that the 2001 models seem to have exactly the same engines worldwide, isn't importing a German-made 2001 M Roadster the same as importing any other BMW model that is currently offered by U.S. dealers which, as part of a sale deal, handle all the paper work needed for you to pick up your newly-bought car in Germany, drive it in Europe during your stay, and then ship it back to the U.S.?
Not possible. Euro delivery on a Z3 (or X5) is not offered since it is made in the US.
While the specs of the US and German 2001 M roadsters will be very similar they are still significantly different they might as well still be as different as the 240 vs 321 hp cars.
This link to a car rental company in Switzerland was posted on the E46 M3. No M roadsters are offered that I can find, but a Z3 2.0 is available for around US$167/day for a 14 day rental. An M3 is US$378/day for a 14 day rental.
