From the video, he could be hitting the limiter. Even though the speedo indicates 153, the limiter could be off a little bit because I know I've seen my revs above 9000 before the rev limiter cuts off the fuel in the other gears.
As to whether the S2000 will hit 170+; I doubt it since the drag is so parasitic at such speed. Besides, when I had my NSX, I could only get it to 170 (indicated on speedo) and that was all she could go.... You can argue that the S2000 is a little lighter and its Cd a fraction lower than the NSX -- but it gives up 30 HP and power transfer efficiency to the NSX (1994.) But, who knows, anything can happen.
I'll have to test the limiter one of these days.
For those who think it's bull that S2000 hit 170mph top speed, check this out:
http://mrtg.nlu.edu/video/s2000.153mph.mpg
As you can see from the video, in 6th gear on the S2000, every 500rpm gives 10mph increase(that's just like our M I believe), he hit 143@7500rpm, 153@8000rpm where he let off, which indicates a 173@9000 redline if he had kept going.
Now, I don't know why he let off, but the video looks legit to me, so it really should hit 173 top speed that way.
Still a doubter? :)
