Basically, running higher octane gas will allow more advanced timing before detonation occurs. When detonation (spark knock)is sensed the engine management systems will begin dialing back timing - resulting in less power, but protecting the engine. In my opinion you should not be running 91 octane in any z3 on a regular basis, but particularly in a chipped M! The engines are all highly tuned to take advantage of high octane fuel, but a chip will optimimize these settings further, eliminating compromises that the factory dials in to allow for occasional lower octane fuel. I normally use 94 in my 1.9, but will use 92 in a pinch.I think 91 octane with an agressive chip is a recipe for trouble not just lower mileage and performance.
