When you supercharge or turbocharge a car you are, under pressure, forcing more air/fuel mixture into the combustion chamber than normally, so that when the ignition fires, more power is delivered to the crankshaft, causing it to rotate faster and with more force than a stock engine, creating more power at the rear wheels. It is the equivalent of increasing the displacement of the engine, and in some racing modes the rules specify so many cu in for normally aspirated engines and so many cu in for blown engines.This is the good. At the same time that you create more power this way, because of the pressure, you create more heat during the intake cycle. This is bad. What is needed is a way to lower the heat of the mixture going into the engine, so more fuel/air can be compressed and delivered on the same piston stroke, and this is accomplished through the use of an intercooler which is located between the blower and the intake manifold. Most superchargers do not come with an intercooler. All turbochargers do.
Since you mentioned you want to lower your 1/4 mile times, the best way to acheive this is thru a turbocharger, not a supercharger. The only superchargers on the market for your engine are centrifugal vane blowers, which start to deliver their power higher up in the rev range,3000-3,500. This will give you a higher top speed, but not much more acceleration. Turbochargers develop their power lower in the rev range, and will give you the acceleration you want, and also increase the top end. The bad on all of these systems, IMO, is that your engine was not designed to handle forced induction, and seal problems, pre-ignition problems due to too much advance in the ignition system and/or inadequate octane in the fuel you use, and bearing problems because of inadequate lubrication might develop. I said might develop. If you turbo, you can expect a minimum of 325 hp. Several contributors on the board are running Mechtech turbos. I know of at least one M. Below is an internet site that can help you.I am not a believer in aftermarket chips and do not think they will give you what you want. Lastly, look to how you can take weight out of the car.
Taking off the top, the spare tire, passenger seat, and anything else that will get rid of weight will help your 1/4 mile times. There is a wealth of info in the archives. Use the site below, especially for turbos. Lastly, there are no free lunches. A good turbo system will cost abt 5K plus installation. IMO, this is the best way to go, and you will get the biggest bang for your buck. I also think that you are going to have problems launching with this much power, so you might have to do something to your suspension in order to harness your new found gain.
