Trunk Lid Storage Reinforcement (archive)

It wasn't long after buying my trunk storage that I noticed that the stiching between the left and middle pockets had ripped out.

I replaced the stitching with some screws...which held for some 2 years. However, recently, the fabric tore out from around the screws and was once again spilling the contents from the storage into the trunk.

I decide I liked the storage, but would find a way to reinforce the seams when I got another.

What I did was buy 4 of these tie straps. They are 3 inches long and about .75 inches wide.

I carefully marked and drilled a 5/32 hole to match the holes in the strap and sandwiched the tie straps over the seam on each side using eight 8-32 x .5 inch bolts (the bolts in the picture are round head...I actually finished the job using flat heads).

I applied a little glue to the threads on the exposed bolt on the back to ensure the bolt doesn't loosed and then finished the face of the strap with some black adhesived-backed felt.

Unfortunately, I had to buy a new trunk storage to perform the reinforcement as the original was impossible to remove without destroying it. But I figure this one will outlast the first, and I won't have to worry about ever removing it.

If you are one of those that are having problems with the storage coming loose, you may want to consider reinforcing the seams before putting it on. If the weight of the contents (like the manual) are causing the storage to come loose, when you finally do get it attached to the trunk lid securely, the next thing to give will be the seams (even if you have one with the little plastic rivets).
