BMW makes an airbag on/off switch for the Z3. It was supposed to be in the first M roadsters but then from what I understand they decided against it for legal reasons. There still is a way to order it, and I'm sure somebody here can get you the part number. The next hard part is finding a dealer to install it. You will need authorization from the NHTSA, as well.

In most cases if the child can fit into the seat with the seatbelt on and you have the seat all the way back the airbag would probably offer a benefit.

The Z3 has been independented crash-tested in a 40mph offset frontal crash test, where it performed equally well with its peers (Boxster,SLK) avoiding all injuries. It is nice to know that all the German roadsters are very well-built and safe vehicles.
