That said, at least BMW has dual-stage deployment - so that the force is reduced when an occupant is belted in. Sitting with the seat well-back and using belts, should minimize the impact of the airbag.
What I can tell you from personal experine is that the Z3 is a very strong car. Coming back from Homecoming in '98 I had the misfortune of hitting a deer on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The center of impact was about an inch below the mirror and about 4 inches right of center on the windshield. While the winshield cracked, the glass remained in, and there was no distortion to the frame. In fact, I was able to drive my Z3 over 50 miles to the nearest dealer for repair. I have seen the shell of he Z3 on display in the Zentrum. The winshield is heavily reinforced - with a double thickness of formed bodywork over a roll hoop that ties into the front rails that hold the engine and suspension.
