I also have a Y2K Z3, and the same thing happened with my top. Apparently there's a service bulletin about this issue, and my dealer had some kit from BMW that was used to fix the top. The problem hasn't reappeared. The service bulletin number is 540399. It's NHTSA Item Number SB611060.

Greetings Fellow Zeemers... I searched the archieve and found a couple of references to a problem I am having relative to my top liner. Both of the attachment points towards the front of the top on either side has broken. I have repaired both myself by using a a crimping tool and wire crimp to re-attach the string to the spring. Now the passenger side has broken again, in a different location and I doubt I can repair as I did before. My question is, has anyone reported this problem to a dealer and what was the outcome. I am going to check with Heishman this week to get a feel for what they can do.

Thanks in advance...
