MZ3 shift knob on a 3.01? (archive)

Sometimes, when I want to be left alone, I stroll through the lot at my "local BMW dealer." This is the one place where, historiclly, I have been sure to receive absolutely zero attention.

They have a sweet Sienna Red Metalic Z3 w/ Beige interior and top that just arrived on the lot. It is a '01 3.0i. I noticed, peering in, that the gear knob has a MZ3 icon on it. I could see the stripes and the "M" plain as day.

By some freak of nature a dealer (not mine) approached me. When I asked him about it he had no idea (thereby assuring me that I has not stumbled into the same dealership in a parallel universe where you get attention AND answers...I was worried there for a second). Has anyone seen this before?
