I have a 1996 1.9 and had a similar sound that was especially obvious when lightly accelerating and even when lightly applying gas in neutral. The dealer tried several things unsuccessfully and ended up calling the factory. The factory told them to replace the rear main seal in the engine and it went away and has yet to reoccur. I know this sounds nuts and I was not in favor or pulling the transmission and doing something that sounded stupid but the mechanic talked me into it and it did solve the problem. The factory ststed that they had had this problem with 318 BMW's. I will be glad to answer any questions concerning the specific sound and where it can most clearly be heard. Good luck...Don
Hi:

I recently acquired a 1997 Z3 1.9L with a 5-speed transmission. The car runs great, but I have noticed what can best be described as a sucking sound (possibly low pitch vibration) when I release the throttle and clutch to shift after running the tachometer up to near redline. Has anyone else noticed this sound? If so, what is the source of the sound and does it indicate a potential problem or it just the sound of dollars going out the exhaust pipe?

Thanks,

John
